Early to Mid-Twentieth Century Chinese Literature: An Introduction for Intermediate Level Chinese Language Students

This is a small book I prepared, in 2014, for students interested in Modern Chinese literature. By modern I mean twentieth century and in the vernacular as opposed to classical literature. The works cited in this book are interesting because they relate to the early capitalistic society that was established in Shanghai after the fall of the Qing Dynasty, which to my mind resembles that of a section of Chinese society today. For the student it is interesting because Mao Dun, (茅盾) in Midnight (子夜) for example, not only uses a wide range of vocabulary, but describes well known places in Shanghai that are familiar to the visitor. There is surely a lot to be desired in this book, but it should encourage students to look beyond grammar and classroom texts.
